Machu Picchu last minute. If you’re planning a last-minute visit to Machu Picchu, you should keep the following in mind. If it’s peak season, it’ll likely take you two days or more to get your ticket to Machu Picchu in the town of Aguas Calientes. If you’re a Peruvian tourist looking for the local train, this will be another major disadvantage, as getting a train ticket will be overwhelming. Therefore, it’s best to book your tour to Machu Picchu several months in advance.

Many videos on TikTok and Instagram recommend traveling on your own, but when you arrive in Cusco, you realize it’s a different reality and not as easy as the videos show.

For foreign tourists, trains are always available on both PeruRail and IncaRail. It’s recommended to book a one-way ticket, as you won’t have a return date if you haven’t yet secured your ticket to Machu Picchu. Once in Aguas Calientes, you must line up at the Peruvian Ministry of Culture. They sell 1,000 tickets daily, divided into three circuits. Tickets are issued based on availability. If the 1,000 tickets run out, you’ll have to wait in line for the next day.

For Peruvian tourists, if you opt for the tourist train, you won’t have any problems. However, if you’re looking for the local train for Peruvians, you’ll have to wait in long lines both ways. Before you do, you must go to the Wanchaq station. They’ll tell you about availability. If you can’t find one there, the only way is to wait in long lines in Aguas Calientes. Later, in Aguas Calientes, you’ll also have to wait in line to get a ticket.

For both domestic and international tourists, there are quite a few visitors between May and August. During other months, it will be less busy, but it’s always recommended to book in advance.
